La céramique

Since the Upper Palaeolithic, man has used the plastic possibilities offered by a wet earth, reduced to the state of paste or mud, shaped, and simply left to dry in the air or in the sun. Established on the edges of the great rivers, the first companies found in the silts deposited by the waters, a ductile material easy to work, taking and maintaining without difficulty a shape suitable to contain the grains and acquiring enough strength to be transported without breaking at a short distance from the place of manufacture. The discovery of vitrified decoration (based on water, silica and metal oxides), already used in the Byzantine Empire and in the land of Islam, allowed the development of glazed pottery in the 10th century. The Arabs who occupied Spain until the 15th century and Southern Italy until the 12th century introduced the technique in Europe.
